Abdullah has been placed on injured reserve and cannot return any earlier than week 11.

The second-year player had started the season strongly, rushing for 101 yards on only 18 carries before being hurt early in the Lions' 16-15 defeat by the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Theo Riddick, one of the NFL's best receiving backs, is likely to take over as starter but Abdullah's injury could mean an increase in work for rookie Dwayne Washington.

Washington had four carries for 31 yards against the Titans and scored his first NFL touchdown in week one against the Indianapolis Colts.

He had been tabbed as the Lions' goal-line back, but is expected to get more carries with Riddick having never rushed more than 43 times in his four-year NFL career.

Former Lions running back Joique Bell worked out with the team on Monday but the 30-year-old is reportedly yet to receive a contract offer.
