London Marathon: Tatyana McFadden wins hat-trick of wheelchair races

Last Updated: 26/04/15 12:04pm

Tatyana McFadden has won the women's wheelchair race at the London Marathon for the third consecutive year.

The Russian-American's time of 1:41:14 beat her winning 2014 effort by almost four minutes. She was two-and-a-half minutes clear of second place.

McFadden's victory comes just six days after her Boston Marathon triumph.

In the men's wheelchair race, British Olympic hero David Weir gamely battled to a runners-up berth in a thrilling sprint finish.

Weir, who memorably won four gold medals at London 2012, crossed the line after 1:31:32 seconds but was beaten by one second by Joshua George.

The United States Paralympian narrowly won the frenetic finish, with third-placed Masazumi Soejima coming a second behind Weir.

"I fell apart at 16 miles," said Weir. "I was using a different technique. It was tough, I was lucky to stay there.

"I had to use a short stroke and use my knuckles and not my thumbs, so I couldn't get to top speed in the final sprint."
