Retired gloveman acts as guest timekeeper in Frankfurt

Former Germany goalkeeper Tim Wiese’s hopes of becoming a WWE Superstar edged closer on Saturday when he appeared at a live event in Frankfurt.

Wiese, who won six caps for his country between 2008 and 2012 and played domestically for clubs including Werder Bremen, Kaiserslautern and Hoffenheim, told German newspaper Bild in September that he had been offered a contract by World Wrestling Entertainment.

And the 32-year-old entered the ring in his homeland this weekend, serving as guest timekeeper for the match between WWE Tag Team Champions Gold and Stardust and The Usos.

Wiese took up body building after his contract with Bundesliga side Hoffenheim was terminated in January, and his bulked-up physique has seemingly alerted WWE’s majority owner, Vince McMahon.

Should Wiese pen a deal with WWE, he would join another ex-goalkeeper, with former Burton and Crewe gloveman Stuart Tomlinson – now known as Hugo Knox – signing for the promotion in December 2013.
