Briton opts to miss London to focus on 2012

Britain's Mara Yamauchi will miss this year's Virgin London Marathon after picking up a hamstring injury. The 37-year-old finished second two years ago but was only 10th last year following an arduous six-day journey from her home in Japan owing to the volcanic ash disruption. The veteran was amongst the favourites for this year's event but with the 2012 Olympics a priority Yamauchi has opted not to take any chances with her fitness. "I am very disappointed to have to withdraw. I was looking forward to returning to London this April, but my injury treatment and rehabilitation must take priority, especially with the 2012 London Olympics approaching fast," she said. "I hope to return to my best as soon as I can. I wish everyone who competes on April 17 the best of luck."
