Norway’s Sven Erik Bystrom claimed the world under-23 men’s road race title after escaping from the peloton on the final climb of the day.
The 22-year-old, who will join UCI WorldTour team Katusha next season, attacked with just under 6km of the 182km race remaining and hung on to win by seven seconds.
The chasing peloton sprinted for the remaining podium places, with Caleb Ewan, of Australia, taking silver and Bystrom’s fellow Norwegian Kristoffer Skjerping claiming bronze.
Bystrom said afterwards: “I saved my legs for the final and I did the right move at the right time. I put all my power into the last climb and went full gas and nobody could follow me. I went super-fast on the downhill and felt really good at the end.”
Earlier in the day, Denmark’s Amalie Dideriksen won the junior women’s road race world title for the second year in a row in a sprint finish.
