The fourth stage of the Giro d'Italia was neutralised as a mark of respect after the tragic death of Wouter Weylandt on Monday.

Weylandt suffered a fatal crash on the descent of the Passo del Bocco and the decision was taken overnight not to contest the 216km trip from Genova Quarto dei Mille to Livorno.

A moment's silence was observed at the start of the stage and a military band played a bugle tribute to Weylandt, before the peloton set off.

Along the way, each of the 23 teams took an equal turn on the front of the bunch before Weylandt's Leopard Trek team-mates moved forward in the final 4km with best friend Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervelo) and led them over the finish line with their arms around each other.
