The Western Conference champions now find themselves trailing 2-1 following their defeat and will be left to rue Carter cutting inside and releasing the ball just before the buzzer, with the score upheld on review.

Manu Ginobili had appeared to notch the game-winner from a lay-up but they were undone by some late magic from Carter and the Mavericks, for whom Monta Ellis scored a game-high 29 points.

There are no such worries for the Miami Heat, who went 3-0 ahead in their series with the Charlotte Bobcats following a 98-85 victory.

LeBron James led the way with 30 points and 10 rebounds, while Dwayne Wade added 17 points as the Heat hit back from a first quarter deficit before surviving a late onslaught from the Bobcats.

Paul George was a key figure as Eastern Conference champions the Indiana Pacers tied their series with the Atlanta Hawks at 2-2 after edging to a 91-88 victory.

George poured in 24 points, including a telling three-pointer down the stretch, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Elsewhere, Reggie Jackson scored a play-off best 32 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder levelled their series following a 92-89 overtime triumph over the Memphis Grizzlies in game four.
