An Australian YouTuber has set a new world record for the highest basketball shot after nailing an attempt from 594 feet above the hoop.

Derek Herron, who is part of a trio called How Ridiculous who perform tricks to share on social media, took the shot from the top of the Mauvoisin Dam in Valais, Switzerland, and could only watch and wait as the ball fell and dropped straight through the hoop.

The basket was so far below him, Herron initially only knew he had made it - incredibly on just his third attempt - by the reaction of his companion at the foot of the dam.

The shot beat the previous record, held by rival YouTubers Dude Perfect by just one foot.

"It was a surreal moment nailing it on the third shot," he told Guinness World Records. "I watched the ball head towards the rim and saw the net move but still had my doubts that it went in until I saw Scott [Gaunson] going crazy."
