Fenway Park: Scene of horror incident on Friday

A female baseball fan was seriously injured after being struck in the face by a broken bat during the Boston Red Sox's clash with the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park.

The woman was sitting near the field, in the third base line seats, when she was struck by a part of Brett Lawrie's bat, which had been shattered by a Wade Miley pitch in the top of the second inning.

Medics were quickly on the scene, treating the stricken fan and shielding her injuries from the view of a young child believed to be her son, with fellow supporters also helping out.

She was stretchered away and transported to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where Boston Police spokeswoman Rachel McGuire said her injuries were "life-threatening."

"It's a scary moment," Boston manager John Farrell said after the Red Sox won the game 4-2. "Our concern is with her and her family.

"All you can think about is a family, they come to a ball game to hopefully get three hours of enjoyment, and unfortunately with how close our stands are to the field of action, an accident like this ...is certainly disturbing."

Lawrie, who was unaware his bat had hit the woman at the time, added: "You try to keep her in your thoughts and, hopefully, everything's all right and (you) try to get back to the task at hand."
