Laura Muir smashed the British indoor 5,000 metres record at the Glasgow Miler Meet on Wednesday evening.

Muir knocked 14 seconds off the previous national best set by Liz McColgan 25 years ago when she ran 14 minutes 49.12 seconds

The 23-year-old Scot, who is also the British 1,500 record holder, has previously only had one track race over the distance and was making the first appearance of the year.

"I am delighted to get it and it is nice to know now where I am at in terms of the 5,000m," Muir told the BBC.

"I've been in South Africa training, and the sessions there since we came back were at PB times for 5,000m so I felt good going into tonight's race."
