Rory McIlroy damaged more than just his hopes of lifting the Claret Jug with a moment of anger during the third round at Royal Troon.
The world No 4 had admitted he needed a fast start to his third round at The Open after heading in to the weekend eight strokes off the pace, but posted three bogeys in his first five holes on his way to a front-nine 37.

McIlroy's fortunes didn't improve after the turn, with a couple of missed birdie opportunities before a blemish at the par-four 15th took him to two over for the round.
The Northern Irishman found the fairway at the par-five next off the tee, before an errant approach saw him lose his cool and take his frustration out on his three-wood.
After lashing his club against the ground, the head of it snapped from the shaft and left McIlroy without a club for the closing stretch.
