Ryder Cup: The five top shots at Hazeltine National
Last Updated: 03/10/16 9:10pm
The 41st Ryder Cup produced much drama as well as the usual selection of outstanding shots over the course of three magical days. Here's a look at five of the best at Hazeltine National...
Stenson's near ace
Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose atoned for their foursomes defeat to Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth on Friday with a crushing 5&4 win in the opening fourballs match, the highlight of which was when the 'Ice Man' Stenson came within a whisker of a hole in one at the eighth.
Willett chips in
Danny Willett showed the type of short-game skills that made him a Masters champion earlier this year as he defied a tough lie in the lush rough to chip in for an unlikely birdie at the second on Saturday. Unfortunately for Willett, he and Lee Westwood could not avoid a fourballs defeat to JB Holmes and Ryan Moore.
Mickelson's monster
American veteran Phil Mickelson remains a fan favourite at any event and still has the ability to conjure up a piece of magic when you least expect it, such as this mammoth putt that produced one of the loudest cheers of the day.
McIlroy and Reed exchange blows
A pumped-up Reed and an equally motivated Rory McIIroy put on one of the most entertaining Ryder Cup single matches in recent history on Sunday. The sheer class of both players was on full show at the eighth hole, where third-ranked McIIroy holed out from 80-feet before Reed followed him in for a sensational half. The passion on show from both players sent the crowd into a frenzy.
Sergio and Phil's epic battle
This clash jumped off the page when the singles were announced. The match delivered on every front. Mickelson performed under pressure after his criticism of previous Ryder Cup captains, making an astonishing 10 birdies but still couldn't shake off Garcia, who carded nine birdies, including the last four holes, to claim an amazing half.
