The 43-year-old hasn't featured competitively since winning the Masters last month, where Woods secured his fifth Green Jacket and a 15th major title with a one-shot win at Augusta.
Woods' win was his first major success in over a decade and moved him within three of Jack Nicklaus' all-time record tally of 18, with victory also taking him one away from Sam Snead's record of 82 PGA Tour victories.
Victory for Woods in New York would not only see him equal Snead's number of wins, but would also move him alongside Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus as the only five-time winners of the PGA Championship.
Woods has history on his side at Bethpage, the venue for his 2002 US Open victory, but is now faced with another test as he bids to lift the Wanamaker Trophy for the first time since 2007.
Defending champion Brooks Koepka and Champion Golfer of the Year Francesco Molinari will partner Woods for the first two rounds, while world No 1 Dustin Johnson is among the other contenders in the second men's major of the year.
Rory McIlroy arrives chasing a first major success in five years, having won this event at Valhalla in 2014, with Justin Rose looking to close the gap at the top of the world rankings and Jordan Spieth aiming to become only the sixth player in history to complete golf's Grand Slam.
