Thomas Detry extended his advantage at the top of the WM Phoenix Open leaderboard to take a dominant five-shot lead into the final day.

The Belgian began round three with a two-shot lead and enjoyed another successful day in Phoenix, where he carded seven birdies, including five on the first nine holes.

He then scored two more on the 14th and 17th before closing the day with a par score on the 18th.

Detry sits top of the summit by quite a distance after scoring 65 on day three and is 18-under overall.

"Getting off to such a good start was kind of the dream today," he said.

"I felt a bit nervous on the first and I hit that 9-iron to two, three feet. Hit many fairways, as well. I don't think I missed a shot in the first five, six holes."

A four-way tie sees Rasmus Hojgaard, Daniel Berger, Jordan Spieth and Michael Kim all joint-second with scores of 13-under.

Spieth is coming off a wrist surgery and is satisfied with his progress.

"This is certainly ahead of schedule for this week," Spieth said. "I've had a good history here so we'll see how I continue to progress on other courses, but tomorrow, I'm going to have to hit more fairways because I'm going to have to hit it closer to try to catch Thomas."

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre is seven shots away from Detry after he carded 65 to move into seventh and sits one shot above world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who posted 68 on day three.
