Rory McIlroy admits there is still plenty of work required to his game after a frustrating week at The Northern Trust.
The Northern Irishman failed to find consistency in both his swing and his putting throughout the FedExCup opener, with a two-over 72 on Sunday seeing him end the week outside of the top 30.
McIlroy began the four-tournament season-finale 44th in the FedExCup standings and was unable to make a move up the rankings at Glen Oaks Club, with the 28-year-old now searching for better fortunes over the next three events.
"My game isn't where it needs to be," McIlroy said after his round. "But it's okay, conditions were tricky out there. This afternoon the course played quite firm and fairways were bouncing out a lot.
"Again, my battling qualities, that's all I really have right now. I'm sort of a little inconsistent with my swing and sort of with everything else.
"It's just a matter of trying to go out there and put the best possible rounds together and see where that leaves me."
McIlroy missed from eight feet to save par at the first and bogeyed the third after taking two attempts from 10 feet, only to undo some of the damage with a five-foot gain at the fourth.
The world No 4 holed a 15-footer to save par at the sixth but made a three-putt bogey at the next from distance, before taking two attempts out of a greenside bunker at the 11th on his way to another blemish.
After getting up-and-down from the sand and draining a 25-foot birdie at the 13th, McIlroy made a run of pars along the closing stretch to end the week on two over.
