Dustin Johnson birdied four of his final five holes to take a three-shot lead into the final round of the BMW Championship.
The world No 2 followed a hat-trick of gains from the 14th with a birdie at the par-five last to close a four-under 68 and pull clear of the rest of the field at Crooked Stick.
Johnson briefly lost a share of his overnight advantage after missing the opening green and posting a bogey-five, but moved back alongside Roberto Castro after a close-range gain at the next.
A run of pars came to end when Johnson posted a gain at the par-five ninth to reach the turn one ahead, before seeing his advantage doubled when Castro failed to save par from 10 feet at the 10th.
JB Holmes kicked off his back nine with successive birdies and went in to a tie at the top when Johnson bogeyed the par-three 13th, only for the US Open champion to respond with three birdies in-a-row to open up a two-shot cushion.
A two-putt par at the 17th was followed by an 18-foot gain at the last to extend his lead, with Paul Casey his closest challenger after the Englishman signed for a bogey-free 68.
Holmes, who began the week 42nd in the FedExCup standings, also posted a 68 to stay within three of the lead, as Castro closed a two-over 74 to drop five off the pace.
Adam Scott closed a blemish-free 67 with back-to-back birdies to move alongside Matt Kuchar in joint-fifth, with Chris Kirk and Ryan Palmer a further shot back on 10 under.
Jordan Spieth bogeyed his final two holes on his way to a four-under 68, while Rory McIlroy mixed two birdies with three bogeys on his way to a frustrating third-round 73.
