Jason Day admits he’ll have to improve on his past record at Blue Monster if he is to put any kind of challenge on Jordan Spieth and find a return to form during the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

The world No 2 has notoriously struggled around Doral, never previously reaching higher than tied-20th in four visits to Trump National, and found the water several times on his way to a joint-31st finish last time around.

Day arrives in Florida off the back of an extended break after finishing in a tie for 11th at last month's AT&T National Pro Am, one of only three appearances the PGA Champion has made on the PGA Tour during a quiet start to 2016.

The Australian makes up part of the featured threeball alongside Spieth and Rory McIlroy and believes he'll need to make fewer errors than he did last year if he's to make any kind of statement at the top of the world rankings.

"It's hard, because the golf course is very long," Day told a pre-tournament press conference. "I don't play the course that bad. It's just the mistakes that kill me and I've just got to try and be a little bit more conservative that way.

"The guys that are longer are tempted so much because you're either coming in with a long iron or a 3-wood to the par-fives.

"You get anything a little bit close to the water and everything kind of funnels in there. Unfortunately I was a little too aggressive last year."

Day finished 15 shots behind Spieth when the pair met in January's Hyundai Tournament of Championship, with the Australian's only other appearance this year being a missed cut when defending his Farmers Insurance Open title.

Although Day's early-season form hasn't replicated the run which him collect four wins in a six-tournament stretch during the second half of last 2015, the world No 2 doesn't think there's any pressure on start producing results.

"I'm not panicking," Day added. "Obviously coming back out and trying to play the way I did during the second half of the season last year, is going to be tough.

"I wanted to come out pretty strong and keep that momentum going on from last year, but with the three-month break that I had, it's hard to keep that momentum rolling.

"The body feels good and there are other guys out there that want to play their way into form. I'm just taking it a tournament at a time and really just trying to prepare the best I can for this week."
