Leading 18 nations by rankings have qualified for biennial event

Scotland's Martin Laird has confirmed he will make his World Cup debut in China on November 24-27. The 28-year-old has based himself in America since his college days and is getting married in Colorado this Saturday. He is not currently a member of the European Tour, though he plans to rejoin next season as he looks to qualify for the Ryder Cup. Laird, who be hoping to emulate 2007 winners Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren, is his country's leading golfer in the world rankings and will be able to pick his playing partner next month. "I remember how much fun it was playing for my country when I was an amateur and it will be just as big a thrill," he said. "If it does end up being me and Stephen then I think it would be a great team. "There are a lot of Scots playing well right now on the European Tour, so if someone could grab a win here or there then who knows what might happen." The leading 18 nations on last week's rankings qualified for the biennial event. England could be represented at Mission Hills by the world's top two players in Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, while Ireland's top-ranked player is US Open champion Rory McIlroy at fourth in the rankings. If he does play, McIlroy could choose his playing partner from last year's US Open winner Graeme McDowell, current Open champion Darren Clarke or three-time major winner Padraig Harrington.
