Rory McIlroy made an encouraging start to his AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am debut with an opening-round 68 in California.
McIlroy mixed six birdies with two bogeys at Spyglass Hill - one of three courses being used in the event - to get within three strokes of early leaders Kevin Streelman and Beau Hossler.
Streelman birdied his final two holes on the same course to close a blemish-free 65 and set the clubhouse target, which Hossler matched at Pebble Beach thanks to five birdies in a seven-hole stretch of his back nine.
Matt Kuchar and Julian Suri sit in a three-way tie for third after posting matching 66s at Spyglass Hill, with Aaron Mise also getting to six under late in the day at Monterey Peninsula.
Playing alongside four-time Pebble Beach champion Phil Mickelson, McIlroy birdied the par-five first and bounced back from a blemish at the sixth with back-to-back gains over his next two holes.
McIlroy picked up shots on the par-fives at 11 and 14, before cancelling out a dropped shot at the 16th with an eight-foot gain at the last.
World No 1 Dustin Johnson is part of the group on five under that also includes Paul Casey and Patrick Cantlay, who fired a hole-in-one on the par-three 11th at Monterey Peninsula.
Shane Lowry carded a bogey-free 67 on the same course to join McIlroy three off the pace, while defending champion Jordan Spieth opened with a level-par 72.
