Dustin Johnson reflects on his second round one-under 69 at The Northern Trust

Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler moved into an early share of the lead during the second round at The Northern Trust.

The American pair moved to six-under-par following their second rounds with three-time PGA Tour winner Jhonattan Vegas also finishing at the same mark at Glen Oaks Club.

Johnson, who opened with a five-under 65, carded a one-under 69 in his second round which saw the world No 1 mix three birdies with two bogeys.

The 2016 US Open winner missed out on winning the FedEx Cup last year after a disappointing final round three-over 73 at the Tour Championship which was eventually won by Rory McIlroy after a lengthy three-way playoff.

World No 10 Fowler, who has one victory on the PGA Tour this year at The Honda Classic, mixed five birdies with a solitary bogey for a four-under 66 to move into early contention.

Meanwhile Vegas, who won the Canadian Open last month, carded a blemish-free five-under 65 to join the American Ryder Cup pair.

Jon Rahm, who came into the week in sixth position in the FedEx standings, posted a second successive round of 68 to finish a four-under par and the Spaniard is well placed to make a move over the weekend.

Paul Casey was another one of the prominent morning starters in the second round and the Englishman, who has enjoyed a consistent season on the PGA Tour, finished the day at three-under after a second round two-under 68 which is where Patrick Reed also finds himself after a three-under 67.

The Northern Trust is the first event of the four-tournament series of play-off events and features the top 125 on the FedEx Cup list, with the number cut to 100 ahead of the Dell Technologies Championship in Boston.
