Top seed Chris Wood and fellow Ryder Cup hopeful Matt Fitzpatrick crashed out of the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play on a second day of excellent scoring at Archerfield.

Wood suffered a surprise 2&1 defeat to Daniel Brooks in the last 32, while Fitzpatrick crushed Matt Ford 6&4 before being eliminated by Alejandro Canizares in a high-quality last-16 encounter on Friday afternoon.

BMW PGA champion Wood was heading for a humiliating defeat against Brooks as he found himself six down at the turn, but he put pressure on his compatriot by winning three out of four holes from the 11th and a par at 16 was enough to extend the contest.

But Brooks, ranked a lowly 102nd in the Race to Dubai, held his nerve to close out victory with a solid par-three at the 17th, although he was then ousted by Germany's Max Kieffer by the same score in the afternoon.

Fitzpatrick, who admitted after last week's PGA Championship that he had been "playing far too much golf" in his quest for a Ryder Cup debut, was in superb form against Ford and was an approximate seven under when he completed a resounding win over Ford on the 13th green.

The reigning British Masters champion was again in decent touch in his last-16 encounter with Canizares, but the Spaniard kept a bogey off his card and rattled in seven birdies as he stormed to an impressive 4&3 victory.

Canizares now faces a quarter-final clash against another Englishman, James Morrison, who enjoyed 4&3 victories over Graeme Storm and Michael Hoey respectively on day two.

Meanwhile, Alex Noren remains on course for another victory on Scottish soil as he cruised to a 4&3 win over Renato Paratore before coming from behind to edge out Nacho Elvira in the final match of the day.

Elvira won the seventh and ninth to claim a one-hole lead at the turn, but Scottish Open champion Noren hit back with birdies at the 11th and 15th, and Elvira then bogeyed the next before the Swede closed out a hard-fought 2&1 success.

Noren will take on compatriot Johan Carlsson in the last eight after the 10th seed followed an eagle at the 11th with three consecutive birdies to beat Chris Paisley 4&3.

Next up for Kieffer is Oliver Fisher, who edged a tight battle against Simon Khan before cruising into a four-hole lead over Richie Ramsay only to bogey the 14th and 16th.

But Fisher regrouped and birdied 17 to clinch a 3&1 victory, while last year's semi-finalist Marc Warren - the only other home hope in the last 16 - could not hold on to an early three-hole lead and slipped to defeat against Haydn Porteous on the 18th.

Anthony Wall continued his fine week as he progressed to the quarter-finals, although he did it the hard way after being taken to extra holes by veteran Australian Richard Green.

Wall was three up with just five to play, but Green hit back with birdies as 14, 15 and 18 before Wall birdied the first extra hole to book a Saturday morning showdown against Porteous.
