Crewe boosted their League One survival hopes with a shock 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Walsall at the Banks's Stadium.
They picked up their second successive win with a crucial goal six minutes from the end when home midfielder Romaine Sawyers mis-kicked in his own goalmouth trying to clear a Billy Waters corner, and Alex defender Adam Dugdale lashed the loose ball into the back of the net. Crewe just about deserved it for the way their defence shut out the home attack, and they went looking for the winner in the second half. The Railwaymen opened brightly and in the fifth minute a deep cross from skipper Matt Tootle reached Brad Inman at the far post, but he lobbed the ball just wide with goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell beaten. After Jordan Cook had a low drive smothered by Ben Garratt, Crewe pushed forward again and Febian Brandy almost scored against his old club. His shot from another Tootle pass was saved by O'Donnell but the keeper allowed the ball to slip from his grasp and only just prevented it crossing the line. Walsall could not find many gaps in the Alex defence but full-back Andy Taylor tried his luck, although the shot was deflected wide by one of his own men.
