Swansea v Wolves preview: Carlos Carvalhal to rest players in FA Cup third-round replay
Wednesday 17 January 2018 19:38, UK
Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal is ready to gamble on FA Cup progress by resting players against Wolves as he prioritises Premier League survival.
The Swans host the Sky Bet Championship leaders in a third-round replay on Wednesday following a 0-0 draw at Molineux earlier this month, but with his side bottom of the Premier League and four points from safety, Carvalhal readily admits he will make changes.
"Yes, I will do that, for sure, I will make changes. Our main competition is the Premier League," he said.
"We respect the cup, we respect Wolves, but we need to play players who are coming back from injuries, we must see the players and give them a chance also to play, so it's natural that we will make changes on Wednesday.
"This is normal. We will try to see all the players and try to give all the players a chance to play and also to progress them."
Mike van der Hoorn came off with a muscle injury in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Newcastle and will be assessed ahead of the game at the Liberty Stadium.
Wolves welcome back defender Danny Batth from suspension but Nuno Espirito Santo's side, who are 10 points clear at the top of the Championship, are without the banned Ruben Vinagre.
Opta stats
Swansea have won just one of their last 12 meetings with Wolves in all competitions (D5 L6), with the last three meetings all ending in draws.
This is the second FA Cup match between the sides in which Swansea will host - Wolves battered the Swans 4-0 in the previous tie back in 1938.
Swansea have lost three of their last four FA Cup replays in which they have been the higher ranked side (L1), losing last time out when in League One to Non-League Havant & Waterlooville in 2008 (4-2).
Wolves have been eliminated in four of their last five FA Cup replays, including each of the last three. In fact, they have not progressed away from home in an FA Cup replay since beating Oldham in the 2007 competition.
Charlie's predictions
I thought this was going to be the tie of the round and that Wolves would have seen them off. They've gone into a bit of awkwardness with scoring goals.
I covered Swansea at the weekend and they weren't bad. We all know about their issues scoring goals, but Ki Sung-Yueng was good in midfield and it tells the story that Ollie McBurnie is keeping Wilfried Bony and Tammy Abraham out of the team.
There was enough to suggest they are improving and I'm going for them to see Wolves off, with Carlos Carvalhal motivated by having a crack at the FA Cup.
Charlie predicts: 2-0 and Abraham to score first (35/1 with Sky Bet)
