Two memorable goals in three second-half minutes helped Scunthorpe beat Walsall 2-1 and earn their first win of the season.
It was a great solo effort from teenage winger Hakeeb Adelukan that put them in front in the 51st minute. He picked the ball up on the half-way line and forced his way forward into the box before squeezing a low right foot shot past goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell which found the net via the inside of a post. Three minutes later it was 2-0 when Gary McSheffrey curled a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner for his first goal since joining the club back in January. That purple spell broke the deadlock to a contest that had been evenly balanced in the opening half, with both defences on top. It was Walsall who might have had an early lead through a powerful close range header from Tom Bradshaw which was clawed away at full stretch by keeper Bobby Olejnik. And just before the break Adelukan went close with Scunthorpe's first real effort when he cut into the box from the right to fizz in an angled drive that forced a fine reaction save from O'Donnell. Just when Scunthorpe thought they were home and dry, a mix-up at the back gifted Walsall a 70th minute goal when Bradshaw took advantage to lift his effort past the stranded Olejnik. But the home side held their nerve without too many problems as Walsall suffered their second defeat of the new campaign.
