A goal in each half from last season's leading scorer Paddy Madden helped Scunthorpe put their first points on the board this season with a 2-0 home win against Crewe.
The Iron steamed into a 10th-minute lead when Madden rose unmarked at the far post to head home a right-wing cross from fellow striker Tom Hopper.
The home side dominated the first half possession but failed to build on their lead. The nearest they came was in the 27th minute when midfielder Sean McAllister tried his luck with a shot on the turn inside the box that came back into play off the underside of the crossbar.
Crewe offered little as an attacking force during the opening period but did create one good chance when striker Brad Inman broke free into the box, only to curl his shot wide of the far post.
They did offer more threat in the second half as Scunthorpe began to look uncertain at the back but Crewe could not find their finishing touch, with striker Marcus Haber and defender John Guthrie guilty of poor finishing while midfielder Billy Bingham had a shot deflected just over.
It was Madden who popped up again with a second goal in the 65th minute, drilling an angled right-foot shot into the bottom far corner of the net to help Scunthorpe breathe more easily.
Madden later missed a chance of his hat-trick when he curled a shot wide from inside the box.
