Rochdale and Oxford fought out a goalless draw at Spotland that did little to boost the Sky Bet League One survival hopes of either side.
A dire first-half finally came to life in the closing stages, with the home side creating a great chance in the 41st-minute when Ian Henderson squared to the incoming Ollie Rathbone, only for the midfielder's side-foot effort to be palmed away by Simon Eastwood.
Oxford then went even closer when Curtis Nelson met a corner with a firm header which cannoned off the crossbar, with Dale goalkeeper Andy Lonergan beaten.
On the stroke of half time, Nelson produced a stunning tackle to deny Brad Inman as he looked to have got in behind the visitors' defence, taking the ball as the striker prepared to shoot.
After the interval, Jordan Williams had a snap shot saved by Eastwood, while at the other end a rare Oxford break ended with Gavin Whyte firing into the sidenetting.
Late on, Henderson raced through on goal but was put off his stride by Nelson as he shaped to shoot, with the defender able to nick the ball off toes of Dale's leading scorer.
