Chris Hackett scored his first goal of the season to give Northampton a 2-1 win over Southend at Sixfields on Tuesday night.
Mathias Doumbe gave the hosts the lead after only seven minutes when he powerfully headed home Hackett's curled corner at the back post. It was only the second goal of the French defender's Town career and came four days after his first - a header in an almost identical position against Hartlepool. The lead lasted only 10 minutes. Michael Timlin made an untracked run from central midfield that beat the home side's offside trap and he neatly finished under Matt Duke after the goalkeeper had elected to stay on his goal-line. The second half was as wide open as the first and the Cobblers retook the lead after 57 minutes with a goal created by substitute Alan Connell moments after his introduction. The forward killed an aerial ball stone dead and threaded a dead-weight pass down the right-hand touchline to Emile Sinclair, who used his strength and speed to get beyond Ben Coker and pick out a pass to Hackett who buried it to settle the contest.
