Former Newcastle midfielder hopes to go out with a win
Former Premier League star Nolberto Solano has announced that he will retire from international football after Peru's upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The diminutive midfielder spent two spells at Newcastle as well as playing for Aston Villa and West Ham during his time in England.
After a total of 10 years in England's top-flight, Solano moved to Greek side Larissa before joining Universitario in his native country.
The 34-year-old has also enjoyed a distinguished international career, winning over 90 caps since making his debut in 1994.
But Solano is preparing for his final appearances for the national side and his planning to go out on a high with wins over Argentina and Bolivia.
Win
"I will hang my boots after playing the games against Argentina and Bolivia and I would like to win, that's the only thing I care about," he said.
"I have played many times against Argentina but I never got a positive result in Buenos Aires so I wish that this time to have more luck, having a good performance and (going out) with a victory."
Peru are currently bottom of the South America qualifying group, having gained only 10 points from their 16 matches so far.
Solano, who has never reached the World Cup with his country, hinted that he would like to turn around Peru's fortunes as the national team coach in the future.
He added: "The only thing that is missing in my career and that I am sorry about is that I haven't played a World Cup for Peru but maybe I have the chance being on the other side."
