Bundesliga leaders take striker on trial after Spain nightmare
Hamburg have taken Ebi Smolarek on trial after the striker cancelled his contract with Spanish side Racing Santander.
The 29-year-old spent two and a half successful seasons at Borussia Dortmund before moving to Santander in summer 2007.
However after just one season in Spain the Polish international was loaned out to Bolton last term. Having started just one of his 13 appearances for the Trotters, Smolarek returned to Santander.
The former Feyenoord youngster agreed to cancel his contract with the Primera Liga side this summer and has been taken in by Hamburg.
The current Bundesliga frontrunners are on the look-out for a striker after losing Paulo Guerrero for the whole season after he damaged cruciate ligaments while on international duty with Peru earlier this month.
Despite currently training with Hamburg Smolarek has been rumoured to have also interested Hertha Berlin and the Pole refuses to rule anything out.
"I am actually on trial at Hamburger SV and I hope I am able to impress the manager, however football is a pretty fast business," he told Morgenpost.
