Viola ace seeks Reds victory
Fiorentina defender Juan Manuel Vargas admits it is vital they stop Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard in their Champions League clash.
Vargas has described the Liverpool duo as world class and he knows keeping them quiet on Tuesday night will go a long way to gaining a positive result for the Viola.
The Peru international feels Fiorentina need to impose themselves on Liverpool from the first whistle if they are to get their Champions League bid back on track after losing their opening game to Lyon.
"This match against Liverpool is decisive for us," Vargas told
skysports.com. "To be in the table with no points after two matches will complicate our future in the Champions League and it is our desire to reach the next round.
"The defeat in Lyon has damaged our hopes in Europe. Now against Liverpool it is necessary to change the way.
World-class
"Fernando Torres is one of the best strikers in the world. The Spaniard is in great form, but we must not focus just on the attack, it is vital we stop the midfield with people like Steven Gerrard who is world class."
Vargas is hoping Fiorentina can grab the lead so that Liverpool have to come out of their shell a bit more, allowing the home side more space to hurt the visitors.
"Tonight the main objective is to score first because this will oblige Liverpool to more offensive," added Vargas.
"This circumstance could be positive for us and it is necessary for us to dominate the ball from the first minute."
Whatever the result, Vargas remains confident Fiorentina and Liverpool will qualify from Group E.
"I have always believed that Liverpool and ourselves will go to the next round and I stick with that opinion after the first games."
