Teenager expected to push for first-team spot

Reading have rewarded teenage attacker Nicholas Bignall with a new contract until 2011. Bignall has yet to make his debut for the Royals, but has spent time on loan with League One duo Northampton Town and Cheltenham Town this season. The 18-year-old, who can play up front or on the wing, has scored twice in 20 senior appearances during his time with the two clubs. He recently returned to the Madejski Stadium after injury cut short his stint at Cheltenham, with the Championship club happy to tie Bignall down to a new deal. "Nicholas is a local boy and another member of our Academy who looks capable of progressing into our first team," director of football Nick Hammond told the club's official website. "This season he's been gaining good experience with loan spells in League One and we hope that from the start of next season he'll push to compete for a place in the first-team squad."
