German club book place in last eight of Uefa Cup
Werder Bremen booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup after they claimed a 3-2 aggregate success over St Etienne.
Bundesliga side Werder headed into Wednesday night's fixture with the advantage after they defeated St Etienne 1-0 at Weserstadion six days ago.
The away team took the lead at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard after just six minutes as Sebastien Prodl headed home from a Torsten Frings corner.
And before the half-time interval, Werder doubled their lead on the night, with Claudio Pizarro bagging his fifth European goal of the season.
St Etienne, though, refused to go down without a fight, and Yohan Benalouane's 64th minute strike reignited their faint hopes of a comeback.
And, while Sebastien Grax struck in stoppage time to make it 2-2 on the night, it was too little, too late for Les Verts.
