Bad night for the Welsh as Bangor and TNS lose
It was a bad night for the Welsh as Bangor City lost 6-1 to FC Midtjylland, while TNS slipped to a late defeat in the first leg of their Uefa Cup first round qualifier against Suduva.
Scott Ruscoe went close to scoring for TNS when he lobbed just wide in the first half, before Sergiy Kozyuberda netted in the 89th minute to make it 1-0 to Suduva.
The Lithuanians could have doubled their advantage in the dying seconds but Paul Smith made a crucial clearance to keep TNS in contention.
Bangor suffered a much heavier loss against Danish outfit Midtjylland, although at one stage it looked like being a close contest when Les Davies found the target after 24 minutes to cancel out George Florescu's opener five minutes earlier.
Winston Reid put Midtjylland 2-1 ahead and former Barnsley striker Kim Christensen then hit a quick-fire hat-trick (54, 58 and 63).
The damage was done but Mikkel Thygesen added a sixth to leave Bangor facing a daunting return leg in Scandinavia.
Cliftonville of Northern Ireland also had Danish opposition in the shape of FC Copenhagen, and they slumped to a 4-0 defeat.
Hjalte Bo Norregaard (22), Jose Luis Junior (67 and 82) and Zdednek Pospech grabbed the goals to put Copenhagen firmly in charge.
Glentoran enjoyed more success and will hope to keep the flag of Northern Ireland flying after a 1-1 draw at home to Liepajas Metalurgs.
Pavel Surnins opened the scoring for the Latvians on 25 minutes but Michael Halliday levelled for Glentoran five minutes later.
St Patrick's Athletic took control of their tie against Olimps with a 1-0 victory in the first leg in Latvia.
Ryan Guy scored the crucial goal on 75 minutes and the Republic of Ireland side must now look to protect their advantage at Richmond Park on 31st July.
Cork City hit back from two goals down at Turner's Cross to hold FC Haka and keep their European hopes alive.
Janne Mahlakaarto (15) and Toni Lehtinen (51) struck for the Finnish side but Dave Mooney pulled one back for the eircom League team and Dan Murray then netted to ensure the tie remains in the balance.
Elsewhere on the continent, Hertha Berlin were among the big winners as they crushed Nistru Otaci 8-1, while Salzburg defeated Banants Yerevan 7-0 and Hapoel Tel-Aviv beat Juvenes/Dogana 3-0.
