Midfielder to fight for international future at Portman Road

Ipswich Town have been boosted by the news that Owen Garvan does not feel he needs to leave the club in order to strengthen his international prospects. It had been mooted that Garvan, who has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League, could depart in order to climb Giovanni Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland pecking order. Garvan was an unused substitute against Colombia last Thursday, but with a number of fellow Championship players on display at Craven Cottage is happy to battle it out for a place in Trapattoni's side while at Portman Road. "There are a few Championship players in the Irish squad and as long as you are doing well then there is no reason a player from outside the Premier League can't break into the national side," he told the East Anglian Daily Times. "It's unfortunate that I didn't get on for either of the games but overall I'm very pleased to be in the squad."
