Switzerland hammered Ecuador 10-1 for their first ever Women's World Cup victory as defending champions Japan staved off a spirited fightback from Cameroon to continue their winning run.

The 11 goals scored in Switzerland's match equalled Germany's 11-0 thrashing of Argentina in 2007 with Fabienne Humm's six-minute hat-trick, between the 47th and 52nd minutes, the fastest ever-recorded at the competition as the Swiss scored eight in the second half.

Ramona Bachmann joined Humm in claiming a second-period treble, finishing her personal scoring binge in the 81st minute by bagging Switzerland's final goal.

Despite the big win, the Europeans remained three points behind Group C leaders and 2011 champions Japan after their 2-1 victory over Cameroon - their second of the tournament.

Aya Sameshima and Yuika Sugasawa scored first-half goals before the Japanese held off an improved second-half showing from the African nation, which included a consolation goal in the final minute.

Elsewhere, the United States were held to a 0-0 draw by Sweden. A point kept the 2011 runners-up, with four points, one ahead of Australia and two ahead of Friday's Scandinavian opponents after two games apiece.

The Europeans controlled much of the first half against the Americans but could not put any real pressure on goalkeeper Hope Solo.

The US then introduced Abby Wambach to the fray in the 68th minute as they went for broke and America's all-time leading scorer narrowly missed a headed opportunity late on to snatch all three points.

Earlier in the day, Australia defeated Nigeria 2-0 for their first win of the tournament. The Aussies will finish their Group D campaign against Sweden on Tuesday while the Americans play against bottom-of-the-group Nigeria. All four teams are still in with a chance of qualifying for the last-16.
