Everton appeal against Allan red card rejected meaning will serve three-match suspension

Everton's appeal against Allan's red card during Thursday's 1-0 victory over Newcastle has been rejected and he will serve a three-match suspension.

The Brazilian was sent off in the 83rd minute, although it came after a lengthy VAR review following his challenge on Allan Saint-Maximin. After consulting the pitchside monitor, referee Craig Pawson showed Allan a straight red card.

He will now miss Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final against Crystal Palace and potentially key Premier League matches against West Ham and Burnley.

Everton lodged two appeals against the red card, both of which were rejected. In a statement, the club said: "Allan's three-match suspension has been upheld after an independent regulatory commission rejected two appeals from Everton over the midfielder's dismissal against Newcastle United on Thursday.

"Everton's request to overturn that decision was rejected on Friday by the commission, as was a second appeal to downgrade the ban for excessive punishment."

Despite Allan's dismissal, Alex Iwobi's goal in the ninth minute of 14 added on minutes at the end of the game sealed a vital victory for Everton. It was only their third Premier League win since September and lifted them three points clear of 18th-placed Watford with two matches still in hand.

Speaking after the game, Everton manager Frank Lampard was naturally delighted with the win but furious with the red card decision.

He said: "It's not a red card. Alan Shearer, Mr Newcastle himself, just said so and the frustrating thing for us is we had the most blatant one of the season against Man City (a penalty not given for handball).

"The referee gets it wrong, we get the apology, this time the referee sees it, he gives a yellow card. Did he seriously endanger the player by kicking him on the foot?

"We now lose Allan for three games. The system is not working because of decisions like tonight. VAR has gone wrong for us twice now."

The VAR official Stuart Attwell, who advised Pawson to consult the pitchside monitor, has already been chosen to referee Everton's FA Cup quarter final at Palace on Sunday.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher:

"I feel the decision falls under on-field yellow card. We've got to accept now that there's a new layer of scrutiny and that is to look at every tackle like that and what they've done. When you look at the tackle, you see an image of Allan flying through the air with both feet off the ground.

"The other thing they look at now is the point of contact, which is another element referees don't always spot on the field. They [the match officials] say the point of contact is just above the ankle and they've made this conscious decision that this season that a challenge with point of contact just above the ankle is going to receive a red card.

"I can understand why Craig Pawson has initially shown a yellow card and most people would've accepted that - but because of this extra layer of scrutiny, Allan has paid the price for the VAR."
