Roman Weidenfeller has been banned for three matches for a racial slur towards Schalke striker Gerald Asamoah.
The Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper has also been fined 10,000 euros (£6,770) by the DFB Disciplinary Committee.
Weidenfeller issued an apology to Asamoah after the game, but denied insulting the Ghana-born star.
However, the DFB decided to investigate the incident, which occurred in the second half of last weekend's derby clash.
Weidenfeller was punished with a suspension but Dortmund escaped being deducted any points.
In a statement confirming the punishment, the DFB said that Weidenfeller had only been handed a three-match ban as he "was provoked into a verbal lapse following a painful clash with Asamoah".
The DFB also praised the fact that the goalkeeper had apologised and made up with Asamoah since the end of the match.
Kehl blow
Meanwhile, Dortmund midfielder Sebastien Kehl will not be available to face Cottbus on Saturday.
The Germany international is struggling with a knee injury and will likely need another three weeks on the sidelines.
