Clint Hill is being lined up to work alongside Joey Barton when he takes charge of Fleetwood Town, Sky Sports News understands.
Former Huddersfield boss Steve Eyre is also likely to be part of Barton's coaching team.
Barton will start in the position in early June once his ban from football is completed and is looking for an assistant manager.
He was suspended by the FA last year after being found guilty of breaching betting rules but will start his new role with Fleetwood once that ban expires in the summer after signing a three-year deal at Highbury Stadium.
Hill, 39, was Barton's team-mate at Queens Park Rangers and Scottish club Rangers.
He is currently playing for League Two club Carlisle United and has no prior managerial experience.
Barton's role at Fleetwood will be his first as a coach and follows a playing career in which he represented Manchester City, Newcastle and Burnley, among other clubs.
