Milan gatecrash English party

Milan defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 and will face Manchester United in the semi-finals.

Milan set up a UEFA Champions League semi-final tie against Manchester United with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich which sent them through 4-2 on aggregate.

After a 2-2 draw in the first-leg at the San Siro, Bayern came into Wednesday's second leg with real hope of advancing, but it was not to be as the Italians scored twice in the first-half.

Clarence Seedorf opened the scoring with a neat finish from the edge of the area and just four minutes later Filippo Inzaghi fired home the second after a good build-up.

The home side were unable to mount a comeback in front of their fans at the Allianz Arena, meaning Milan will play United, who saw off Serie A opposition in Roma, in the last four.

Bayern started the better with Andreas Ottl and Roy Makaay both firing wide from range and Massimo Oddo having to clear off his own line after Christian Lell had connected with Mark van Bommel's ball at the back post.

Lukas Podolski's powerful drive from the corner of Milan's area had to be repelled well by Dida before another attempt from distance by Ottl again flew past the Brazilian keeper's post.

Milan's first shot on goal produced the opening goal on 27 minutes, as Seedorf worked himself an opening on the edge of the area after Kaka's ball into feet and fired a low strike into the bottom corner.

Oliver Kahn's first job had been to pick the ball out of his net, and he was soon having to again as Inzaghi struck four minutes later.

The Italian hit-man was looking a little rusty in the opening exchanges, but when gifted the chance after Seedorf's delicate flick from Gennaro Gattuso's pass, Inzaghi made no mistake as he dispatched past Kahn.

Replays indicated a hint of offside in the build-up to Inzaghi's goal, but the assistant did not spot it and Milan were able to take a comfortable lead in the tie.

Bayern bid to pull a goal back just before half-time and Podolski was close to stabbing home from close range after van Bommel's free-kick, however Dida was able to gather low down to his right with the help of his defence.

Van Bommel saw two strikes from distance go off target early in the second-half, although the second was much closer, while Lell's inviting cross almost ricocheted in off Hasan Salihamidzic at the far post.

Van Bommel was looking to shoot at every opportunity and he forced Dida into a strong save on the hour before having his shot from the edge of the area deflected just over the top of the Milan goal.

In between the Dutchman's two chances, Kaka could have put the game out of Bayern's reach as he weaved his magic inside the Bayern box, but Kahn denied the Brazilian midfielder with an outstretched leg.

Owen Hargreaves wasted a well positioned free-kick by firing off target and moments later Salihamidzic's shot was straight at Dida as Bayern looked to get back in the game with just ten minutes remaining.

Van Bommel again went close in the final five minutes, but his effort was deflected just wide of goal and the hero of the first leg, Daniel Van Buyten, forced a good stop from Dida in the dying stages.

Kahn had to pull off a save from Kaka with the final touch of the game, but Milan advanced and will join the three Premiership sides in the last four of the Champions League.
