Kuyt ready to fly for Reds

Dirk Kuyt is keen to get off the mark for Liverpool against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

Dirk Kuyt is keen to get off the mark for Liverpool against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

The Dutchman returns to Holland for Liverpool's opening Group C UEFA Champions League tie against Eredivisie champions PSV.

Kuyt is keen to help Liverpool get back to winning ways after their disappointing Merseyside derby defeat to Everton and he revealed he enjoyed a good goalscoring record against PSV while at former club Feyenoord.

"It gave me a good feeling when I scored here in Eindhoven last week for Holland. And it will give me a really good feeling if I score here against PSV," vowed Kuyt.

"And I have a pretty good record against PSV, I have scored three times in my last two games against them and it would be great to get my first Liverpool goal here, and in Holland.

"It is extra special for me to make my Champions League debut for Liverpool back home here in Holland, and at a great club like PSV.

"The defeat by Everton, though, still concerns us.

"We are making too many mistakes, but we are also good players and we need to play better as a team. Maybe we are not gelling after so many new players, and then a lot of us away on international duty.

"You are only back two days before the weekend matches, that does not give you very much time to work on things.

"It was really disappointing to lose a derby, it is not a good feeling, it is not funny.

"We can pick ourselves up in the Champions League, it has come quickly after the defeat to Everton and if we can win against PSV all our bad feelings will change.

"What we do know is that we have two important games now in six days against PSV and then Chelsea, and if we can do well in those we will know we are getting things right.

"It is important that we start our Champions League games in a positive way, we will want to put Everton behind us."

Kuyt also jumped to the defence of Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina after his mistake in Everton's third goal.

The Spaniard made a shocking error for Andy Johnson's second goal fumbling a shot from Lee Carsley, but Kuyt believes Reina does not deserve all the flak aimed at him.

"It is wrong to blame Pepe Reina for what happened, we were 2-0 down in the 94th minute when he made that mistake, it didn't change the result," said Kuyt.

"He is a really good goalkeeper and the problem was not him, it was us for making so many mistakes in front of him."
