Sturrock admits Carson defeat

Paul Sturrock admits his hopes of signing Scott Carson on loan appear to be fading.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Paul Sturrock has admitted his hopes of signing Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson on loan appear to be fading.

The 20-year-old had a stint at Hillsborough last season and Owls fans were hoping to see the England World Cup goalkeeper back at the club for the coming season.

Carson is likely to be third choice at Liverpool next season but The Reds are thought be edging towards keeping the former Leeds man at Anfield as cover.

Although refusing to give up on bringing Carson back to the Championship outfit, Sturrock admits the chances are looking slim.

"It's not looking as if we're going to get Scott but until I get a certain 'No' I'm going to keep going down that road," he told the club's official website.

"Circumstances are going against us but there's still an opportunity."

Sturrock concedes he may have to go into panic mode should Carson, as expected, remain with the Premiership giants.

The former Southampton boss confesses he has missed out on a number of possible goalkeeping targets by continuing to pursue Carson.

However, he believes he made the right decision and still claims to have other options available to him before the start of the new season.

"Probably I've waited longer than I should," Sturrock added.

"We've lost a couple because of the wait. Plan A has always been Scott. Plan B has been scuppered because of waiting on Scott. And now we're on Plan C.

"We'll be panicky about it. But I think Sheffield Wednesday fans would have wanted their manager to wait as long as he could.

"If there was one name the fans wanted at the football club it was Scott Carson so I felt it was important to give him every opportunity.

"We're going to have to make sure we've got other irons in the fire."
