Konchesky's England heartache

Paul Konchesky was disappointed not to be involved in England's World Cup squad.

West Ham United defender Paul Konchesky was disappointed not to have played any part in England's World Cup squad.

The former Charlton Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur left back enjoyed a superb season with The Hammers last term, with the East Londoners surprisingly reaching the FA Cup final back in May.

The 25-year-old believes his form with The Hammers was enough to earn a call-up for Sven Goran Eriksson's preliminary squad ahead of the finals in Germany.

"I thought I'd done enough at club level to be at least involved in the squad before they went out to the World Cup, but it wasn't to be," Konchesky told Sky Sports News.

"It hurts, but I've got on with it and hopefully, another chance will come for me."

Konchesky thinks the impending arrival of Steve McClaren to succeed Eriksson as Three Lions boss gives the likes of himself and other English players a fresh chance to play for their country next season.

"For every English player, it's a positive," he added.

"It's a clean start for everybody, it's easier for every English player to be looked at and hopefully, I will be one of them.

"If I can start well for West Ham, then who knows what's around the corner."

After West Ham surprised many last term, the defender is confident the Upton Park club can build on their first season back in The Premiership.

"I feel we've got the team and the spirit to do it again," Konchesky said. "We've got a young and enthusiastic team.

"Obviously, the manager's buying (players) and is still trying to buy, so those qualities can come into the team and help push us even further.

"With the Uefa Cup as well, I feel we can go a bit further this season."
