Jermain planning Spurs stay

Jermain Defoe says his heart remains at Tottenham and has no plans to ask for a move.

Jermain Defoe says his heart remains at Tottenham and has no plans to ask for a transfer.

The England marksman hit the headlines last week when Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez claimed Spurs had been hawking the forward around The Premiership.

Benitez's statement did not sit kindly with the White Hart Lane paymasters who are planning to ask the Premier League to look into the matter.

Liverpool's Spanish manager refused to back down on Saturday and all the speculation could well affect Defoe's chances of securing a spot at the World Cup finals.

Defoe is finding it tough to nail down a place under Martin Jol and admits it is frustrating to watch from the sidelines, but he has no plans to seek a move away from North London.

"Obviously it is difficult when you are not playing, but when I am playing I love it," Defoe told the Sunday People.

"My heart is here and I want to contribute to achieving something special at this club.

"I am a Tottenham player and putting on the shirt and going out there on a Saturday.

"I can't see why I should think twice about going elsewhere - this club is going places and the players all believe we will qualify for Europe.

"I haven't thought about asking for a move, that happened to me before and I am not going through that again. I'll never go into the manager and ask for a transfer.

"Why should I ask for a transfer when I don't want to move?"

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has revealed The Reds are talking to Spurs in a bid to defuse the row over Defoe and insisted they had no plans to sign the striker.

"We are in dialogue with Spurs, and it is an episode we want to put behind us and move on," Parry told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme.

"I am sure we will do that. They are making the point they are not interested in our player (Djibril Cisse), and we not interested in their player - so I think we'll resolve that one."
