Friedrich gets German call

Jurgen Klinsmann has called-up uncapped FSV Mainz defender Manuel Friedrich.

Jurgen Klinsmann has given a call-up to uncapped FSV Mainz defender Manuel Friedrich for Germany's World Cup warm-up match with the United States.

The 26-year-old was one of two surprise inclusions in the 23-man squad as the Germans attempt to bounce back from the humiliating 4-1 defeat to Italy last month.

Also included is Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Kehl, although it is thought that he has been included as a gesture to the Dortmund fans after Klinsmann said that Christian Worns would not be involved in June's tournament.

Kehl already has 24 caps but it is the first time he has been included with Klinsmann in charge.

Germany squad for their game with the United States on March 22: Oliver Kahn (Bayern Munich), Jens Lehmann (Arsenal), Timo Hildebrand (VfB Stuttgart);
Arne Friedrich (Hertha Berlin), Robert Huth (Chelsea), Marcell Jansen (Borussia Monchengladbach), Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), Per Mertesacker (Hanover 96), Patrick Owomoyela (Werder Bremen), Christoph Metzelder (Borussia Dortmund), Manuel Friedrich (FSV Mainz); Sebastian Kehl (Borussia Dortmund), Michael Ballack, Sebastian Deisler, Bastian Schweinsteiger (all Bayern Munich), Tim Borowski, Torsten Frings (both Werder Bremen), Fabian Ernst (Schalke 04), Bernd Schneider (Bayer Leverkusen); Gerald Asamoah (Schalke 04), Mike Hanke (VfL Wolfsburg), Miroslav Klose (Werder Bremen), Lukas Podolski (Cologne).
