Benfica look to keep Simao

Benfica insist they have no plans to sell Liverpool target Simao Sabrosa.

Benfica insist they have no plans to sell Liverpool target Simao Sabrosa.

Liverpool have held a long-term interest in Simao and they tried to sign him in August before Benfica pulled the plug on the deal right at the last minute.

The Reds are strongly tipped to make a new move for the winger when the January transfer window reopens as they continue their search for a right-sided midfielder.

Benfica insist they have had no new contact with Liverpool and are keen to keep him as they prepare to face Rafa Benitez's men in the UEFA Champions League next February.

"At this moment there exists no negotiations about the subject," said Benfica director general Jose Veiga.

"Simao is with Benfica and has a contract with us.

"We are looking for the arrival of reinforcements and do not want exits.

"The board has decided to keep Simao because we are not interested in losing our best players."

Veiga also refused to rule out a move for Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.

Dudek is considering leaving Liverpool after growing increasingly frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities this season.

Benfica boss Ronald Koeman is believed to be looking to bring in a new goalkeeper and is believed to have made Dudek his number one target.

Veiga admitted Dudek is one of several goalkeepers they are considering as possible signings.

"He is an option between several candidates for the place," added Veiga.
