Jol rules out Robben move
Martin Jol says Tottenham Hotspur cannot afford Arjen Robben's wage demands.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Martin Jol believes it will be impossible for the North London club to sign a player like Arjen Robben. The big Dutchman feels Spurs missed their chance to lure the Holland international to White Hart Lane when he was at PSV Eindhoven, with the 21-year-old having moved to Stamford Bridge in a £9 million move in July 2004 instead.
Robben's future with Jose Mourinho's side has been the subject of speculation after a reported bust-up between the talented winger and the Portuguese tactician recently.
The situation prompted Jol to tell a Dutch football website that he was interested in signing Robben, but the former West Bromwich Albion player has done a bit of an about-turn by claiming the player's wages would be a major stumbling block.
"It's impossible," Jol said. "I don't know if you know what those sort of clubs pay in wages.
"You know our philosophy. We should have identified Robben three years ago.
"We don't want to buy them when they are worth £20 million, so we buy them earlier.
"Then we have to develop them into £20 million players."
