Alan Hutton admits he was on the brink of quitting the game after he broke his leg.

Rangers defender Alan Hutton admits he was on the brink of quitting the game after he broke his leg last season.

The 20-year-old had embarked on a hugely promising career in the Glasgow giants' first team, before the devastating injury picked up against Kilmarnock ruled him out for six months.

Hutton's rehabilitation has been far from straight-forward too, with resulting muscle problems delaying his comeback until now.

And the popular defender revealed that he experienced some dark times along his road to recovery.

"There's been a lot of ups and downs over the last months. It did cross my mind a couple of times that it could be over for me but you just have to put those thoughts out of your head and plod on," said the Scotland Under-21 man.

"I was doing well, then I had a setback with a muscle injury in my leg so it's really been up and down.

"But I'm glad that I can now push on and hopefully get back in the team."

Hutton now hopes he can stroll out in Alex McLeish's starting line-up once again, when Rangers travel to Dundee on October 16th.

And the defender also admits that he is spurred on by the emerging competition from young full-back Alan Lowing.

The 17-year-old has forced his way into the first team during Rangers' frustrating start to the season, and Hutton is full of praise for the young talent.

"I've watched him a few times and he's a really good player, and to be playing for the first team at only 17 is brilliant.

"It shows that there is a lot of young talent here at Rangers. Obviously that means there is more competition for myself but it's only going to spur me on to do even better."
