I've heard a few people say something about United's record when Wayne Rooney scores. How good is it? Craig O'Donnell, Warwick
MARTIN SAYS: Wayne Rooney seems to be something of a lucky charm. Rooney has scored in 16 of his 46 matches for Manchester United since signing for the club in August 2004 - and the Reds have won all of them, the 16th coming after he scored his 21st goal in a United shirt in their 3-2 victory at Craven Cottage on Saturday. I'm sure most people remember the way he kicked off his career with that hat-trick against Fenerbahce in the Champions League. He has, however, only scored one more in Europe since then, but it was another match they won, a qualifier against Debreceni VSC in August of this year. Most of his United goals have come in the league - 14 - and his other three have come in the FA Cup. If that wasn't impressive enough, he has the same record at international level - if you discount the Danes! When Rooney has scored England have always managed a win... except when they have faced Denmark. Rooney has scored twice against the Danes and on both occasions England have been beaten, 2-3 at Old Trafford and 4-1 in Copenhagen. Macedonia (2-1), Lichtenstein (2-0), Iceland (6-1), Switzerland (3-0) and Croatia (4-2) are the other nations breached by the young striker in his 26 caps. And if you're interested, Richard, Wayne was nearly as successful with Everton. He scored in 15 of his 48 appearances for the Toffees and they lost only once.
Chelsea's unbeaten run is creeping its way towards Arsenal's 49 matches. But whereas Arsenal were classed as great entertainers Chelsea are criticised. It has made me wonder - Chelsea stand at 37 games unbeaten, who out of the two sides had scored the most goals at this stage? I'd also be interested to hear about the goals conceded, too. Steve Lettis, Barnet
MARTIN SAYS: Chelsea have taken a fair bit of stick, that is true. And I, like Jose Mourinho and his team, don't think it's justified at all. Like Arsenal they have served up some wonderful entertainment in the past year and I'm sure they will continue to do so. I have to say that goals alone do not prove beyond all doubt which team is the most exciting, but it does make for interesting reading when we compare the records. In the first 37 matches of their 49-game unbeaten run Arsenal scored 79 goals and conceded 25. Chelsea have scored 82 goals and conceded 18 over the same period. Chelsea fans may want to take note of that particular stat!
I know that Trevor Francis was the first £1million player, but who was the first £2million player? Denise
MARTIN SAYS: We never no for sure what the final transfer fee paid by a club actually is. In saying that, the record books show Mark Hughes to be the first £2million British player. Barcelona actually smashed through that barrier to acquire him from Manchester United, paying the Old Trafford club £2.8million for the Welshman's services. Hughes eventually made his way back to United two years later.
When was the last time a team outside of the Old Firm won the SPL? Jake Jonley, Carlisle
MARTIN SAYS: Younger readers may not be aware of this but there was a time in the 1980s when the Old Firm well and truly lost their grip on the SPL. The emergence of Dundee United and Aberdeen even spawned a new label. They were known as the New Firm after sharing the Scottish title between them during 1983 and 1985. Dundee United were crowned champions in 1983 and then Aberdeen won it twice on the bounce under the guidance of a Scottish manager you may not have heard of, Sir Alex Ferguson. In fact, it was an even worse time if you were a Rangers fan. They finished outside of the top three during that period. They were soon back on track when, after Graeme Souness arrived at Ibrox, they won nine championship back-to-back between 1989 and 1994.
How many clubs have won all three of the major European trophies (Champions League/European Cup, UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup)? Steve Mayhead, Morden
MARTIN SAYS: Four clubs have won all three European competitions, Steve. They are Bayern Munich, Ajax, Barcelona and Juventus who were the first to do it.
I know it doesn't tell the whole story, but with so much talk about the Premiership and the excitement on offer etc, how did it compare with the other major European leagues this weekend in terms of goals scored. Bazza, Leytonstone
MARTIN SAYS: There were 30 goals in 10 Premiership games last weekend. Elsewhere in Europe, there were 17 goals in the Bundesliga, Germany's top division, 18 goals in La Championnat, France's elite league, and 27 goals in La Liga in Spain. But joint-top scorers out of the continent's major leagues were Holland and Italy, who both had 34 goals scored in them last weekend.
