Stelios in Bolton talks

Stelios Giannakopoulos could stay at Bolton after the club offered him a new deal.

Stelios Giannakopoulos now looks likely to stay at Bolton after the club offered him a new deal to stay at The Reebok Stadium.

The Greek international had looked like he could be heading for Liverpool after the European champions signalled their interest in him.

With just a year left on his current contract, Bolton looked like they would have to cash in now, with Manchester City also looking to sign the 31-year-old.

However, The Trotters have now come in with an improved offer of a new contract and Sam Allardyce is much more confident that the former Olympiakos man will be staying.

"Well I think the chances are bigger and better now," Allardyce told the club's website.

"We've made a great offer to him and I'm confident that he'll accept the offer.

"He tells me that he's always wanted to stay at the club and now we've come up with what we consider to match his terms I just hope he'll accept it so we can get on with what matters most and that is playing football.

"I want him to stay and the lads want him to stay. He says that he loves the place so we hopefully have got over those difficulties and he'll put pen to paper and finally put a stop to all the speculation."
