Roma's plans for next season have been dealt a major blow after Fifa handed them a year-long transfer ban as punishment for the Phillippe Mexes deal.The Italian giants will be unable to delve into the transfer market during the summer and next January's transfer window as a result.
The punishment comes after world football's governing body deemed Roma's actions regarding the centre back's move from Auxerre last summer to be 'unfair conduct'.
Auxerre were left fuming when the French international breached his contract and joined the Eternal City outfit a year ago, with the Ligue 1 club having taken their case for compensation to Fifa.
The result of Fifa's findings saw Mexes handed a six-week ban from football back in February, but the governing body look to have also caught up with the Giallorossi and punished them for their involvement in the Mexes deal.
As a result, the Stadio Olimpico club will be unable to sign new players for the forthcoming campaign, though it is thought their moves for free agents Shabani Nonda, Samuel Kuffour and Rodrigo Taddei will be allowed to be completed.
Roma's lawyers are expected to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, with the club having been already ordered to pay Auxerre ‚é¼8 million compensation for Mexes.
